A native of Lukang, Taiwan, Li Ang holds a Master degree in Drama from Oregon State University, USA. Her works cover a wide range of themes, fearlessly and innovatively exploring topics such as love and desire, sexual violence, female sexuality, the cycle of life and death, political oppression, historical memory, trauma, and transformation. Recognized as a pioneering feminist writer in the Chinese-speaking world, Li Ang holds a unique place in global literature. In 2004, she was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of Arts and Letters) by the French Ministry of Culture. Nobel laureate Kenzabur e praised her as one of the two best female writers in the Chinese language. Her novel The Butcher’s Wife has been translated into fifteen languages and adapted into both film and television. Additionally, seven of her other novels have been published in multiple languages.
