Rúnar Helgi Vignisson is an Icelandic author, translator, and professor. His literary repertoire spans novels, short stories, essays, and creative nonfiction. His notable works comprise the novel Nautnastuldur (Indulgence Denied), nominated for the Icelandic Literary Prize in 1990, and the short story collection Ást í meinum (Love and Other Complications), which received the DV Cultural Award for Literature in 2012. His latest work, Þú ringlaði karlmaður: Tilraun til kerfisuppfærslu (You Confused Man: An Attempt at a System Update, 2024), is a personal and reflective exploration of contemporary gender discussions in the wake of the #MeToo movement, for which he received the Jón Sigurðsson Prize.As a translator, Vignisson has introduced Icelandic readers to numerous international authors. His translation of J.M. Coetzee's Boyhood earned him the Icelandic Translation Prize in 2006, and he received the Reykjavík City Children’s Literature Award in 2007 for translating Kenneth Oppel's Sunwing. He co-edited a widely acclaimed recent five-volume short story anthology featuring works from around the world, translating several stories himself.Beyond his writing and translation endeavors, Vignisson has significantly contributed to Iceland's literary community. He co-founded and chaired the Icelandic Translators’ Association, served on the board of the Icelandic Writers’ Union, and has been a board member of the Reykjavík UNESCO City of Literature. Since 2008, he has been a professor at the University of Iceland, directing the Creative Writing Program and influencing a new generation of Icelandic writers.
